CprE 288 Embedded Systems Final Project

The VORTEX platform, includes the iRobot Create, the Cerebot II board, and attachments such as the servo, SONAR, IR sensor, and LCD, was placed at a random position in the test field. The rover traversed through several hazards to position itself within the retrieval zone.
The program runs in the robot collected the data from the sensors and decided next move. It also detected if the robot had arrived its destination and sent the signal (music) at the end.

Music 446 Final Project

The music 446 Final Project required the use of Reaktor as Instrument and Pro Tool for composition. From the Reaktor library there are lots of amazing pre-built instruments. Before I started this project I have tested some of them and found they have meet all my demands for this project. So I decided to use them as my instruments to complete this project instead of making my own instruments. Due to the time limitation the composition part was really rushing time.

Unfortunately I cannot analyze the structures of these powerful instruments because they are too complex. The logic is hard and the amounts of the elements are huge. I did remove some useful parts for me; however since I couldn’t have much time also I couldn’t modify much of the structures. However I did gain lots of ideas and understanding on the design of Reaktor instruments and the effects of the different settings of instruments on the sound.

Instrument:

First one of instruments i picked is Carbon 2. It is a really powerful instrument which can offer lots of amazing different sounds with the different settings of snapshots. It has standard three- oscillator, analog-subtractive synth. The pre-filter and post-filter helps set vary saturation to deal with the color of tone.Three oscillator slots on the interface provide some different choices of waveforms. A noise generator and a ring modulator based on the signal of the three main oscillators are added for a total of five basic sound sources. The 3 oscillator slots come with controllers for volume, pitch, and waveform synchronization. And the tooltips made by the author are detailed and helpful. I used the bird which is one of the snapshots in Carbon 2 and I found without fully pressing the key in the MIDI keyboard the sound is different due to the delay and the attack time of the waves. It is one of the useful tips I got during using this instrument.

The second instrument I chose is Memory Drum 2. My experience on making music is all about bands. I have to build a brief drum part of the song then I can started to think of the composition. Memory Drum 2 is an advanced sampler that enables the independent configuration of up to 128 samples in a compact. It has an attack-hold-decay envelope, multiple output channels, complex modulation options and a range of effects. This instrument is easy to use since different keys refers different parts of the drum; for example the C1 represents one of the kick drums, C2 represents one of the snare drums. The panel of Memory Drum 2 is also very effective to use. It shows the current key pressed and also the waves of the sound. The modulation of Memory Drum 2 is also very well-organized. Since its modulation routing is advanced various parameters are able to be modulated by a variety of sources.

The third instrument I chose is 2-Osc which was also used in Lab 10. 2-Osc is a similar synthesizer to Carbon 2 but it has totally different design on both panel and structure. On the panel 2- Osc displays more of the options to set varieties of the sound. In structure the design has more clearly shown the parts of the instrument in the second level inside of the instrument.

Composition:

Most of the time I had spent on composition is choosing right sound from the instruments. And due to the time limitation I had no really much time to think of a good combination of sound. In this project I came up with some rhythms which are hopefully comprehensive to the audiences. From my experience I still added guitar and drum for the song to fill the song and help me gain some more ideas. I added some synthesizer portion to enhance the sound but I still need more time to fill more of the combinations of sound to make the song warmer and stronger. Before the guitar popped in I used an intro which is made by the bird snapshot in Carbon 2 to enhance the hearing of the experience about this song.

Project Title

Microsoft Imagine Cup 2014

Project Statement

With our project, Words With Kinect, children will be able to fully interact with the software by their voices and gestures. The software will be able to tell them if they are pronouncing words, vowels, sentences, correctly. The software will also help them learn to write by allowing them to write/draw letters with their hands. Words With Kinect is effective because it allows children to learn through seeing, hearing, and physically writing with their hands. Reading is an essential skill for everyone to have. The earlier that children can learn how to read, the more effective they can learn other skills at school. We believe that Words With Kinect can be an effective, yet entertaining solution for children to learn English.
